LARGE-SPANS METALLIC STRUCTURES

Dimirtis Bairaktaris, Dr. Civil Engineer

Summary: The cover of the Tae-Kwon-Do closed stadium is a combination of a composite conoidal shell structure along the perimeter and a centrally suspended pre-stressed cable-structure. The metallic cover of the spectator’s stand in the open-air Beach Volley stadium is suspended from an arched double-jointed space structure. The bridge over the Corinth Isthmus on the Corinth-Loutraki Road consists of a space structure suspended from a steel parabolic arch with fixed supports on both sides. The pedestrian bridge at the Katechaki Metro Station over Mesogeion Avenue consists of a steel box cross-section structure for the pedestrian deck acting as a cantilever, one-sidedly cable-stayed from a tall pylon of similar structure. Aside from these structures’ morphology, special subjects of analysis and dimensioning are also presented.
