Brief CV:

Mr. Vernardos Stylianos enrolled in the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA in 2002, after successfully participating in the national exams. He specialized in structural engineering and carried out his Diploma thesis, entitled: “Recording of bioclimatic parameters in the Athens Metro network”, under the supervision of I. Tzouvadakis, Assist. Professor of NTUA. Subsequently, he attended the postgraduate program “MSc in Analysis and Design of Earthquake Resistant Structures” and, supervised by Ch. Gantes, Professor of NTUA, he completed his postgraduate thesis: “Aerodynamic calculation of loads and dynamic behavior of wind turbine towers”, resulting in a publication in the proceedings of international conference: “2nd International Balkans Conference on Challenges of Civil Engineering (BCCCE), 2013”. Since 2014 he is undergoing his PhD on the design of “sandwich” type shells for wind turbine towers, under the supervision of Professor Ch. Gantes.

Research:

Participation in the research program “ENSSTRAM: Novel design concepts for ENergy related Steel STRuctures using Advanced Materials”, co-financed by the European Union and National funds. In the framework of this program, the possibility of replacing the traditional conical steel shells of a wind turbine tower, with height of over 100m, by a sandwich-type shell, will be investigated. Specifically, the optimal design of these shells and the possible failure modes of the tower, associated with bending strength, fatigue, local buckling (wrinkling) and delamination at the interface of the shell will be determined, while the influence of the relative density of the intermediate core material, which is the most important parameter that affects the strength, stiffness and energy absorption capacity of the structure, will be assessed.
